A convicted sex offender who was supposed to stay away from children is accused of raping a five year old girl.
Twenty-Nine-Year-Old Marcert Sanford was released from jail in May of 2010 after serving a portion of a ten-year sentence for child rape.
Sanford is now charged with the rape of a child, aggravated sexual battery, violation of the sex offender registry act and violation of residential and work restrictions.
He is being held on $1 million bond.
Police say Sanford admitted to raping the 5-year-old victim.
The little girl told investigators it happened while she was at a relative's house and that it was not the first time Sanford had touched her inappropriately.
In 2006 Sanford was convicted of the rape of an 11-year-old girl, one year before new sentencing guidelines went into effect requiring those convicted of child rape to serve 100% of their time.
The Shelby County Prosecutor's Office says if he is convicted this time he will be sentenced to at least 25 years in prison with no chance of parole.
The Memphis Child Advocacy Center treats rape victims as young as three and says 90% of the time victims know their abuser and 40% of the time it is someone related to them.
The center not only counsels children, but teaches parents how recognize the signs of sexual abuse and how to prevent it.
"You know if you have frequent appropriate conversations with your kids your kids will learn they can come and talk to you if something happens. If you don't have those conversations your kids won't come to you," said Beryl Wright.
Next month the Child Advocacy Center is offering two 'Stewards of Children' child sexual abuse prevention training programs for parents, and organizations that serve kids.
